Chelsea is likely to have to add more central defenders in the 2023 summer transfer window due to Wesley Fofana’s injury and long-term absence from the game.
Chelsea is compelled to add more central defenders
Originally, Chelsea had no plans to buy additional central defenders in the 2023 summer transfer window. The Blues’ priority was nothing else but to upgrade the central midfield and striker positions.
However, everything changed after Wesley Fofana suffered an injury. The French player recently tore his anterior cruciate ligament.
This injury will undoubtedly force Fofana to be out of action for a long time, potentially even missing the entire 2023/24 season in the worst-case scenario. This has a significant impact on the upcoming transfer plans of The Blues.
It is almost certain that Chelsea will have to add more central defenders in the 2023 summer transfer window. This, in turn, could mean that the team at Stamford Bridge may not recruit any more forwards.

Currently, Chelsea has three players capable of playing as the main striker, including Broja, Nicolas Jackson, and even Nkunku. Manager Pochettino is likely to put his faith in the existing names for the upcoming season to allocate the budget for additional central defenders.
Of course, the final decision will be made by the Argentine strategist after Chelsea completes their pre-season tour ahead of the new season.
In another development, Chelsea’s plan to add at least two central midfielders this summer remains unchanged. The Blues are striving to finalize a deal to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton. The London club has reached a personal agreement with the Ecuadorian midfielder and is actively negotiating with Brighton to settle on a reasonable transfer fee.
